Happy Thanksgiving everyone (tomorrow)! I hope that the meals and breaks and family time are all splendid.
Yesterday we failed to visit Bethlehem as we had hoped since the Jerusalem Post printed that there was rumored violence from Hamas concerning the region. Bummer.
This morning we had a group devotions for Thanksgiving, and we were reading Psalm 136, that Psalm where the group responds to each line with "his love endures forever." It was going along merrily until we got to the verse where it said that God smote the Egyptians and their firstborns, where we all stopped, considering our regional context. After our shocked laughter, we continued until we got to the part about God killing other kings and giving the land to Israel as an inheritance. We all, once again couldn't respond. Man, it's crazy the things you never notice before. I must have read that Psalm every Thanksgiving before now, but being in the Middle East just changes things a bit.

It does it really does. It changes everything. Little passages in the Bible you simply read over now hit you in the stomach and force you to wrestle with what the passge is really saying. Then not only do you have to struggle with what the passage is saying but you have to figure out what those implications are for life now.
